English Roses and Salad

No diary entry last week, so have I been on holiday? I wish. I did a bit of work in the garden on the Saturday and in the afternoon went with a local business to give advice on hanging baskets for outside their establishment for a competition.

Sunday was going to be busy. I have not been able to cut my front hedge as blackbirds and thrushes had nested and were feeding young, however they had fledged and thought I would be able to cut my now “grown out of hand hedge”.

Woke up Sunday morning, put my foot out of bed and the whole world started spinning. First thought was ear infection but more likely to be a virus or bad reaction to high pollen. Whatever it was, it put me out of action all last week and the garden needs some care and attention.

This weekend I have tried to do a bit of catch up, planting up a few containers, transplanting and cutting back the columbines that have gone to seed.

The tomatoes in the greenhouse needed attention, taking out the side shoots on the cordons and tying in the new growth. Also the cucumbers now needed supports and both the tomatoes and cucumbers have set fruit. Somehow I just have to be patient not easy!

The salad crops I am trying out this year are coming on well and we will be having our first meal off them this week. All should be “cut and come again” but now that I have a bit more room in the greenhouse I will sow more to ensure succession.

It is very difficult to pick favourites in the garden this time of the year but I have to give mention to the David Austen English Roses. The colours, shape and perfume make it a delight to wander around the garden.

If you are looking for ideas of what to do in your garden in June, have a read of The Flower Garden in Juneand The Vegetable Garden in June. I hope you find these two articles of help.
